“It was regrettable. That was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the signal was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases involve:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable offensive signal.
Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of $16 billion, making the fine easily payable for the billionaire proprietor.
